The Women’s Center launched our Microgreen Initiative in 2021 and now grows for local area markets. The farm yields locally sourced, organic vegetables which area chef’s and restaurants use in various, healthy menu items. WCUF donates our abundance to local area food banks, assisting other food insecure individuals and families throughout The Triangle. WCUF produces delicious and nutritious organic fruits and vegetables for the center, as well as for our housed clients. One important study described urban farming as a cost-effective, preventative health intervention. Scientific evidence demonstrates that farming, improves health, psychological wellbeing, and cognitive functioning while reducing levels of stress, anger, depression, and anxiety. Community farming as Horticultural Therapy is a highly touted approach to wellness among the homeless/vulnerable populations. WCUF provides job and leadership skills, self-worth, and how to advocate for themselves. Our farm is an essential part of treating and healing the whole woman, mind, body, and spirit. Extended critical services such as medical and behavioral healthcare, case management, and job support, Bridge Transitional Housing, with access into WC’s Permanent Community Supportive Housing are accessible, as we assist each woman in setting and reaching attainable goals, while helping her realize her dream of a fulfilling and dignified life. We provide basic needs that include meals, hygiene, clothing, mail service and more. As a multi-service crisis intervention and assessment day center, we work with each individual woman to break the cycle of domestic violence, trauma, sexual assault, human trafficking, and homelessness. We provide a safe, low barrier, client-centered and trauma sensitive environment for women, where they can begin the stabilization and healing process.Īs agents of community support, The Women’s Center is here to assist at-risk and homeless women in need of safety, stabilization, and transformation.
